A dated front entry can change the entire appearance of a home. For this Scarborough project, the homeowners wanted to give their existing entry more character and create a stronger architectural focal point.

The solution was a custom cedar gable façade built around the existing entrance, using locally sourced cedar and details designed specifically for the house.

The Design

The goal was to create an entry that looked like it belonged with the house rather than something simply added to the front. The new façade was designed around the existing roofline and entrance, with rough cedar posts, knee braces, and custom gable details adding depth and dimension.

Because the work was being integrated into an existing home, the design also had to account for the vinyl siding, existing structure, roof flashing, and weather protection behind the new woodwork.

Locally Sourced Cedar

The new façade was built using cedar sourced from Lumbery, a local Maine supplier that works with locally sourced wood. Cedar was chosen for its natural appearance, durability, and ability to complement the character of the home.

The rough-sawn material also gives the entry a more substantial, handcrafted appearance than standard exterior trim.

The Build

The cedar façade was built on site to fit the existing entry. Rough cedar posts, knee braces, and the gable framework were individually cut and fitted to create the finished design.

Because the new façade extends beyond the original siding, careful attention was given to attachment points, weather protection, and the transition between the new cedar work and the existing exterior.

The goal throughout the build was to make the new entry feel intentional—like it was designed as part of the house rather than added later.

Finished Result

The completed cedar façade gives the entry a stronger architectural presence while keeping the design appropriate for the existing home. The natural cedar adds warmth and texture, while the custom gable details make the entrance a distinctive focal point.

This project is a good example of the kind of work Randall Renovations enjoys most—combining practical carpentry with custom design to create something specifically for the home.
